This seemed to take a far more serious approach to the subject, and it seemed to stay on topic far better. The black and white photography, camera angles and editing of Battle Circus are top rate adding verisimilitude to an unusual story about medics during the Korean War.
Jed is a relentless taskmaster, demanding Captain John Rustford (William Campbell) to fly desperately needed blood supplies at night, even in the teeth of a fierce storm. After the helicopter lands safely, Jed goes on a binge, forcing Whalters to make his chief surgeon either straighten up or ship out. The primary focus of the film is the horny character played by Bogart in his never-ending quest to get inside June Allyson's underwear! I'm trying to convert all my VHS to DVD. Director Richard Brooks has done a dandy job. After a North Korean advance forces the MASH unit to escape through enemy lines, the lovers are temporarily separated. This is indeed a strange movie. With Humphrey Bogart, June Allyson, Keenan Wynn, Robert Keith. Bogart and Allyson have no chemistry. Bogart is the only one who gives this film any life even though he seems to feel his time is being wasted, which it is. A young Army nurse, Lieutenant Ruth McCara (June Allyson), is newly assigned to the 8666th MASH, a mobile field hospital constantly on the move during the Korean War.
Although not a graphic portrayal, this movie is overall a more realistic and serious treatment of the subject than the future, popular, and satirical MASH feature (1970) and the TV series (1972-1983). The TV series ran from 1972 through 1983 and was one of my all-time favorites. The film's technical advisor, Col. K. E. Van Buskirk, had commanded one of the first MASH units in Korea, and ensured that the MASH and aerial scenes were authentic. After seeing that he is beloved by the unit, she agrees to his advances. I was intrigued by it at first because it's the story of a MASH unit in the Korean War - long before MASH the TV series or MASH the movie or MASH the book.
. Bogart was totally out of place in this role and acted like it. Despite initial obstacles, their love flourishes against a background of war, enemy attacks, death and injury. Their romance blossoms in the midst of overwhelming numbers of casualties, threats from the enemy and from the weather, and emergency evacuations that test the mettle of even a unit whose very name suggests quick mobility. A quirky and realistic slice of Korea, with Bogie! This was Humphrey Bogart's only film for MGM. Looking for something to watch? ", Principal photography took place on location in Calabasas, California, and Camp Pickett, Virginia, where MASH units trained.
Want to share IMDb's rating on your own site? Mostly because Bogey frankly looked too old to be playing a young horn-dog and the dialog they gave him was unbelievably corny and filled with sleazy double-entendres! Way more adult than most war movies. Never mind that in real life Bogart's fairy-tale romance with Lauren Bacall was between two people 25 years apart in age -- this is the movies, and at 53, Bogart seems slightly creepy, forcing his attentions on a young nurse and getting somewhat pissy when she dares to ask if he has a wife.
Title: | . ", According to MGM records, the film earned $1,627,000 in the US and Canada and $735,000 overseas, resulting in a profit of $265,000..
He later cautions her that he wants a "no strings" relationship. Set in Korea and made during the war, this is the love story of a hard-bitten Army surgeon, and a new nurse ready to save the world. This FAQ is empty. Responsible for the dismantling and re-pitching of the tent hospital is Sergeant Orvil Statt (Keenan Wynn), a former circus roustabout. When a now more assured Ruth treats some North Korean prisoners, a frightened prisoner (Philip Ahn) with a concealed grenade is calmly disarmed by her soothing words and manner. Ruth is warned by the other nurses of his womanizing ways, and that he is probably married. Their romance blossoms in the midst of overwhelming numbers of casualties, threats from the enemy and from the weather, and emergency evacuations that test the mettle of even a unit whose very name suggests quick mobility. Watch this film and see a 5e3 YO Bogart still pulling a great performance with his friends June and Keenan. Anyway the performances are fine all around, and the film is decent. It makes many of the same points that author Richard Hooker would make in his 1968 book (and that would be the inspiration for the later movie and TV series of the same name) - the pointlessness of war, the heroics of the medical teams and the need for those involved to just find a way - any way - through, whether that meant alcohol or sex (or, I suppose, anything else.)
"Battle Circus" is another vehicle written and directed by Richard Brooks, with less satisfying results Very likely the major fault was in teaming Bogart with June Allyson, an actress of extremely limited range whose perpetually simpering attitude and breathy whining of lines must surely have kept Bogart's nerves on edge. Wynn, a former circus type, knows how to pull up stakes, so he takes care of moving the equipment and providing what little humor there is.
. There she meets and is roughly romanced by Major Jed Webbe, one of the unit's surgeons.
And he is SO unconvincing in this role and her character is such an idiot!! At first, Ruth is a bumbling addition to the nurse corps, but she attracts the attention of Jed immediately because of the needless risks she takes.
Allyson was initially afraid of acting with Bogart, but her recent roles in light romantic comedy had typecast her and she was encouraged by the studio to attempt more serious fare. The title of the film actually refers to the speed and ease with which a MASH unit, with its assemblage of tents, and portable equipment, can, like a circus, pick up stakes and move to where the action is. It's only natural to compare the two films, and to compare them with the TV series that began 15 years after "Battle Circus." Seems to me like someone should have caught that. "The Robber," "13 Assassins," "Thor" and More. Most of it is because the war is really secondary.
I have the VHS edition, but would like to see it in DVD!!!
Many small moments of candor and skill don't patch up this mediocre mash-up, Excellent first look at a MASH unit filmed during wartime, Interesting take on MASH with annoying romantic plot, "They haven't invented a medal yet for those people.
Drama, Certificate: Passed I found the developing love affair to be touching and honest which is something I never expected. But despite the fact that plenty of screen romances have survived a greater age difference between couples than the 18 years that separates Bogart and Allyson, Bogart just comes off as uncomfortably old to be pulling the kind of shenanigans he tries with Allyson here. Bogart told Brooks, a close friend, "let's not make any more movies together. For, in depicting the hairbreadth, makeshift operations of one of these heroic units, channeling its precious cargo to safety under constant exposure to the enemy. Was this review helpful to you? Five patriotic convicts are helped to escape imprisonment in Devil's Island so they can fight for occupied Free French forces against the Nazis. the producers of this movies decided they could not call this movie MASH they thought people would think of mashed potatoes.
Having coincidentally seen another Korean War film, "One Minute to Zero," immediately before this one, I can vouch for the fact that "Battle Circus" is a major improvement. It seems to simply give a look at the life of those serving in a MASH unit, and it seems to be one of the many "tribute" sort of movies that were made in the era. The sets, lighting, the camera shots were all here in this film. Youthful tough Johnnie Stone has fallen under the influence of petty crook Frank Wilson, who involves him and robbery and murder using his sister's boyfriend's stolen gun.
As for June Alysson, she plays a complete dummy, as each time Bogey makes totally inappropriate advances on her, she blames herself for his pig-like behaviors!! Use the HTML below.
A group of nurses returning from the war in the Phillippines recall their experiences in combat and in love. Anyway, it's not something I would recommend unless you are a Bogart or Allyson completist. studiously traces a routine wartime romance against an absorbing, often tingling background of a mobile Army surgical hospital at the Korean front. Maybe if MGM had realized that a generation later, a comedy classic would be launched about a MASH unit in Korea, they might have opted for a more lighthearted treatment of the subject here. Bogart (in his only film for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) plays a surgeon and commander of Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) 8666 (shortened to "66" in the dialogue), with Allyson playing a newly arrived nurse. The combination of Allyson and Bogart is great because it is hard to imagine two actors cast more against type; this is perhaps what made the romance credible. When the U.S. forces withdraw from Java, ahead of the Japanese invasion, U.S. Navy doctor Corydon M. Wassell coordinates the remaining wounded servicemen and leads them to safety towards the last Allied evacuation points. Third rate Bogart and Brooks would be fifth rate with anyone else.
When a young Korean child needs special care, Ruth entreats Jed to perform an open-heart operation, despite the reservations of the unit commander, Lieutenant Colonel Hilary Whalters (Robert Keith). Jim Beaver
Allyson, June and Frances Spatz Leighton.
Thomas, Bob. The one-liners never stopped at the 4077th, and there were few characters, especially in the last few years, who were not ever-ready to spew out endless dreary puns galore. The movie stars Humphrey Bogart and June Allyson, and costars Keenan Wynn and Robert Keith. However, that in itself is no great recommendation. There she meets and is roughly romanced by Major Jed Webbe, one of the unit's surgeons. An engineer trapped in an unhappy marriage murders his wife in the hope of marrying her younger sister.
