scotland rugby team players 2020

Have only seen Harris picked at 13 this year. I’m pleased he’s cleared out Wilson and P Horne who just don’t quite have the ability to excel at international level consistently and he’s largely rewarded players in form. Glad PHorne and Wilson no longer selected. When Toonie was getting sparkling performances out of the likes of Darryl Margo it looked like he had the magic touch – we need to see Scotland highly competitive in every game and confident in what they’re doing. France Six Nations Squad Lee Jones hasn’t played for months. Hoyland/(possibly one of Graham/Kinghorn if Harris or Steyn makes the 23). 3 or 4 people, presumably, would need to be crocked before Tagive actually makes the 23. Would explain his lack of tries over the last 18 months or so. Skinner is a big absence but with no game time since pre-world cup it seems a sensible decision and I’m glad Toonie now admits fitness and form should be a much bigger consideration in picking a team/squad. If picked on form then difficult to see why Bennett left out + I’d have R Gray. All progressed in the RWC, they all are ranked higher in the World Rankings. Leaves out the west coast Scots boys – Ried, Bennett, R.Gray and picks obscure foreigners instead. I hope this squad is about Toonie building for 2023 and learning the value of picking on form. The rangy winger offers something different to the other options in the back three and is the most “Tombola” like selection.

Playing very well with a recent mom award. Hoyland? Will see how Hogg goes as captain but I have a few reservations. Best for defence maybe On the positive side, it’s good to see Matt Scott and Huw Jones back in the fold, but the omission of Mark Bennett and Gordy Reid makes little sense to me. “Don’t think too many people can complain about it” might be the most optimistic comment I’ve ever seen on the blog ;). Is he or should he be a starter for Scotland?…probably not..centre is looking stronger again based on club form. Think it says more about our desperate lack of wingers than anything else. He also became a touch predictable, and maybe now we can see more variety bringing people, like Tagive or Steyn into the mix. I for one am glad Townsend hasn’t picked Pete Horne or Ryan Wilson – it shows he is looking more to the future. Up front Matt Fagerson fans may feel aggrieved as he and Blade Thomson miss out, and while you can argue about quality, the number 8 options picked ahead of him have been selected on form. Thomson Toony has gone all-in with his squad selection and has it all to do to build a team able to restore national credibility after the RWC fiasco. Haining’s journey from the Western Force Academy, via Jersey Reds and Bristol, is an interesting one – he marked Sean Maitland on the wing during the Lions tour of 2013, having toyed with a switch to the centre. Other than that quite please with the squad, some players stinking it up because of lack of options – cough Pyrgos – but he’s picked on form. So I’m optimistic. However as that’s no fun the bbc had him fit in between Maitland and McGuigan so someone with an M. mmmm Mallinder??? I’ll be happy with 1 win, if we get beaten by better teams. And of course, I hope Tandy is hammering them on defence. Cupboard looks pretty bare.

Success or failure, it’s not all down to one man. Gregor Townsend said: “We are very much looking forward to coming back together as a coaching and playing group after such an unprecedented and challenging period in our sport and across society in general. Skinner presumably not picked as not fully fit yet – wonder if we will see him later on (and maybe a couple of others….). powered by HTML5, CSS3, love and odd-shaped rugby balls, Stuart Hogg - pic © Alastair Ross / Novantae Photography, Scotland 2020 Six Nations Squad Announced, Agree wit FF – ‘It was bad game management from Russell’. Tagive qualifies on residency and has impressed now he’s finally fit and playing for Glasgow. Hmm where did you read the list, on the bbc sport website it is out of order but on the SRU website it appears to be in it’s correct position so maybe just a typo by the bbc.

Excuses about “this is a young group, we’re still learning at this level” etc are not what we want to be falling back on come March. Blade Thomson Classic Walter Mitty.

Sat 31 October, Wales v Scotland, Parc y Scarlets, 2.15pm Maybe wrong but thought I heard Matt Fagerson has a broken rib which would explain his omission. I’ve always said Harris is a better player than he gets credit for, but Bennett is just class. Want to see him and Jones start together (v Italy?). Incidentally this is a man who drops players from one game to the next, brings in long term injured players over fit capable players. Reid, on the other hand, has done pretty well for Scotland when called upon. His last cap came in the Cardiff drubbing of 2018. I’m sure he’s lost some pace. I’ve confidence in the pack as I believe they will train by scrumming against Mark Dobsons wallet. We will see if Matt Scott can finally repeat his club form on the international stage. Basically Saracens Sunday fixtures and presumably the rest and recovery that follows, clash with Scotland’s training starting on the Monday heading into the opening game. However, its Toonies game plan which I hope has changed massively is what I am looking forward to. We’ve got what we’ve got. Keep up to date with all the latest from the Six Nations with the Rugby World website and social media channels. Backs look good and we actually in a few positions have quality replacements not chosen. 1999 were Five Nations Champions. Exactly sir, thinking about it – we try & play “rugby” , they defend high, restrict the space, employ the short kick (to tactically move Hogg into traffic) & simply don’t let us play. Chris Harris Why should we give him the stability of a long term contract. I think he should forget about the next world cup until the end of 2021.

If he steps up and doesn’t let it affect his game great but I fear it will. Toony worked the side weary before the RWC what would be the benefit for Bennett in that situation. Fraser Brown Is This Scotland’s Hardest Player Of All Time? George Horne Luke Crosbie and Kyle Steyn have made previous training squads but not a Scotland 23. I would say that both are aware that there is a lot of competition for the 12/13 shirts and they need to perform every week now. For Scotland he needs some outstanding performances as he’s not had one For a while. Glasgow Forwards; Brown, Z Fag, Gray, Cummings, Gordon,Turner. Mata, Cherry/Fenton I actually prefer the look of this squad – lots of energy and snarl and strong form. The modern game is slightly different relying as it does on being in the ref’s ear. Ireland : Raynal Adam Hastings Let’s see what happens. The disclosure this week of Dodson’s eye-watering salary and bonus, particularly in comparison with the financial packages for other rugby governing bodies, is a blatant challenge to the sport in Scotland. This is the most probable reason why his Lion’s…, Russell has intercepted both Sexton and Farrell in recent seasons, so these things happen. A starting back row of Ritchie, Watson and Bradbury excites me but none of the other back rows do. The Dodson who 2 years ago was criticised by an employment tribunal over the SRU’s dismissal of the director domestic rugby. At the minute every side bar Italy is a better side, IMO. DVDM will no doubt play wing as soon as is qualified. Hogg (C); Graham, Jones, Hutchinson, Kinghorn; Russell, Price = 6, No Room for M. Fag or Wilson? 100% the biggest call he has to make! I would also say that Steyn has a chance if those two start as he’s starting to tune in to them. Good God…. Sutherland/Dell (Bhatti needs development but got the raw material) Scott Cummings Any news on Grigg and his injury? Stuart Hogg will captain the 2020 Scotland Six Nations squad, leading the team into a hugely challenging year of fixtures that will make or break Gregor Townsend’s career as coach.

Which is why I think we should stick with Johnson who has found some form again at Glasgow and offers continuity both with Finn on his inside and either Harris or Jones outside him (WC, and club level respectively). Maybe Toony needs to change his plans, or maybe Tandy has the answer in defense, or maybe players need to be more aggressive/precise/calm..maybe it’s a systemic issue. His squad selection suggests to me he is at least trying to do that…whether its enough time will tell…and wether he has much more time will no doubt depend on this 6N. Look at Wales: They have a couple of world-class players (e.g.

He’s not flash but has improved each game he’s played at International level, to the stage some people on here actually liked him for a while!

He’s also scored more tries that those two this season and has a bit of ‘x-factor’ about him. Sean Maitland Who might this spot have been penciled in for? If Johnson and Jones play well and stay uninjured I think they will start as the six nations pairing. I think in recent weeks all have been solid defensively. Nice mix of freshness, form and experience. Ben Toolis Other than that it’s as expected with some novelty Toonying for interest. In view of our LH issues his selection makes perfect sense. What has he ever actually done on the pitch? made them grand slam winners and got them to 4th in the RWC. We simply can’t play into their hands.
For backrow cover (assuming Ritchie, Watson and Bradbury start) I would have liked to have seen Fagerson (hopefully later in the tournament) but reckon Crosbie has got bags of potential.

True, sadly. Would really like to see Sutherland step up… he has really underachieved at LH. Toonie has brought in form players over long-term injured players. Jonny Gray Does the whole 2nd playmaker thing well which will complement Russell. Fraser Brown. I’m guessing that Maitland won’t play against Ireland because of the whole Saracens training camps fiasco (which is why Taylor is missing from the squad; I wonder who he’d have replaced (maybe Steyn or Tagive?)). Whilst Sutherland is on the comeback from injury I don’t think there is a big disparity in gametime between him or the other two looseheads this season. I don’t understand why we don’t use a 125kg lock who’s been a key player in the top team in the french league and who’s just at the prime age for a 2nd row forward. Can you confirm? Mata, Bare bones…but you’d imagine we’d get some players released back who aren’t in the top 25/26 for a given 6Nations match….

The men they’ve been left out in favour of, Chris Harris and Rory Sutherland, will undoubtedly try their hearts out but, alas, are found wanting at international level.
I would argue that there is a limitation of ability to see beyond the point with the way both players lack a perspective of edge that is needed and required at international level. Follow Rory on twitter @scotrugbyblog. Robbie Nairn? I really hope he has a couple big games for Edinburgh between now and the 6N and starts as first choice as he’s a great player and could lock down that shirt at least until the South Africans qualify. I have to say I am a little bit dissappointed in some ways as there seems to be quite a lot of developmental inclusions which I feel a bit (world cup cycle)ish. He does, from a distance, seem to struggle with player relationships…and accepting when his methods and selections failed. Fagerson Im not sold on at test level…and definitely not at 8. Hogg, Kinghorn*, Hutchinson, Scott, Graham, Russell, Horne, Dell, Brown, Nel, Gray, Toolis, Ritchie, Watson, Bradbury Stuart McInally
